This project includes the construction of approximately 12,000 feet of new 24-inch diameter water main along Braddock Road and Campus Drive on the George Mason University (GMU) campus as shown on the map below. The new water main will be located entirely within Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) right-of-way and on GMU property.
The project is a component of Fairfax Water’s Integrated System Master Plan, resulting from its acquisition of the City of Fairfax water system in 2014. Once completed, the new water main will provide the primary source of supply to a water tank on the GMU campus, which will be replaced under a separate project in the near future. Together, these projects will improve water service by increasing delivery pressure to areas of higher ground elevation in the southern portion of the City of Fairfax and portions of Fairfax County in the vicinity of GMU.
During construction, traffic will be maintained in both directions on Braddock Road at all times, although temporary lane closures will be required at times. Work hours on Braddock Road will be limited to 9:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 9:30 pm to 2 pm on Friday. Construction on the GMU West Campus will require intermittent detours of Campus Drive. Construction of the project will last for approximately one year.
