To serve the growing demand in western Fairfax County, Fairfax Water must expand the capacity of the water transmission system.
The first phase of this water transmission main from the water treatment plant to New Dominion Parkway was constructed in 2001. The new 54-inch pipeline will extend this
water main to the Fox Mill Pumping Station just south of Fox Mill Road. The additional transmission capacity provided by the new water main will benefit all customers in
the western part of Fairfax County.
Fairfax Water has constructed approximately 11,400 feet of a new 54-inch water main along the east side of the Fairfax County Parkway from New Dominion Parkway to its
Fairfax Water’s Fox Mill Pumping Station. The tunnel portion of the project was completed in May 2014. The tunnel is 8 feet in diameter and 8,400 feet long. It extends
along Fairfax County Parkway from New Dominion Parkway to Fox Mill Road and was bored through solid rock at a depth of 35 feet to 55 feet using a special tunnel boring
machine. The water main portion of the project is complete and in-service, with final restoration activities ongoing. Final project completion is expected during the summer of 2015.
